<p>In BikeCAD, we've always been able to specify various attachment points for the seat stays. Stays can be located along the top tube, the head tube, the down tube and of course the most common option: the seat tube. When attaching stays to the seat tube, the ends have been located some distance down from the top of the seat tube. Some builders have found this awkward because if they wish to tweak the length of extension of the seat tube, the stays will shift up and down accordingly. There has been a desire to have the ends of the stays located with respect to the intersection of the top tube. In BikeCAD version 19.5, we have a new option which allows for this. Note that for all these attachment options, the distance is not measured along the center of the tube, but rather along the surface of the tube at a point determined by dimension Z.</p>","","1","0","1","0","bcurry");

<p>In BikeCAD version 15.0 we can model looped stays. This is done with the Looped stays checkbox in the Rear dropouts dialog box. The Cx, Cy, Sx and Sy input fields still define the end points of the straight sections of stays. However, to connect the chainstays and seatstays, BikeCAD will add a bent section of tube with the maximum radius that will fit between these two points and still be tangent to both the chainstay and seatstay. Therefore, if we enable the looped stays option on a typical dropout design featuring independent stays, we will likely find the bend to be much smaller than we would like. To obtain a larger radius, we'll need to adjust Cx, Cy, Sx and Sy to move the end points of the stays further apart and away from the rear axle.</p>
<p>In order to connect the radiused section of tube tangentially to both the chainstay and seatstay one of these tubes will have to be extended. We can see this if we turn on the \"Extension for looped stays\" dimension in the Rear dropouts tab of the Dimensions dialog box. As we play with the end points of the seat stays and chainstays, you can see this extended section of tubing moving back and forth between the seat stay and chain stay.</p>
<p>While we cannot directly input the radius of the bend, we can display the radius and adjust the end points of the stays until we achieve the radius we desire.</p>","","1","0","1","0","bcurry");

For tubes in the front triangle, you'll find the Curved check box in the Tubing dialog box.</p><p>For chain stays you'll find two Curved check boxes in the Chain stays dialog box. One check box curves the stays in a way that is visible in the side view and the other check box curves the stays in a way that is visible in the <a title=\"Auxiliary view\" href=\"http://www.bikecad.ca/stays_auxiliary_view\">auxiliary view</a>.</p><p>Similar controls are found in the seat stays dialog box, with one check box for curves in the side view and another for curves in the auxiliary view. Note that if you select a wishbone seat stay you will gain an additional option for curving the seat stay in the side view.</p><p>This option is called Raked. It is meant to accommodate an approach to curving the seat stays that was used in an older version of BikeCAD. Because raked stays are controlled using a different dimensioning scheme, this may still be an option you'll want to explore for current designs.</p><p>If our design includes any <a title=\"Extra tubes\" href=\"http://www.bikecad.ca/extra_tubes\">extra tubes</a>, the curved check box for those is found in the Extra tubes dialog box.</p><p>When bending tubes, it's helpful to display the dimensions used to control those curves. For most curves in the side view, you'll find the dimensions in the Tubing tab of the <a title=\"Dimensions dialog box\" href=\"http://www.bikecad.ca/dimensions_dialog\">Dimensions dialog box</a>. Here, for example, we see all the dimensions controlling the seat stay curvature in the seat stay tab, which is a subtab of the Tubing tab. Dimensions relating to curves visible in the auxiliary views are controlled in the <strong>Stays (auxiliary view)</strong> tab. Here, for example, we see all the seat stay curve dimensions in the Seat stay subtab.</p><p>Curvature dimensions for Extra tubes are found in the Extra tubes tab.</p><p>The actual mechanics of applying bends to tubes is the same for all tubes, so I'll demonstrate on the top tube. If we apply a single bend, dimension <strong>A</strong> is the distance along the line connecting the two end points of our tube, where the deflection occurs. Dimension <strong>A</strong> can be expressed as an actual distance in mm, or as a ratio of overall tube length. Dimension <strong>B</strong> is the amount of deflection applied to the tube. Dimension <strong>B</strong> can be either positive or negative. Dimension <strong>R</strong> is the radius of the bend. If we set the radius to <strong>0mm</strong>, we'll see that dimension <strong>B</strong> goes all the way to the corner of the bend. Notice that as we increase the radius of the bend, dimension <strong>B</strong> still points to the theoretical corner of that bend. Notice also that you do not have the option to directly input the angle of the bend. However, the bend angle is one of the dimensions that you can show on the screen. If you are looking to model a bend with a particular angle, you can play with dimensions <strong>A</strong> and <strong>B</strong> until the desired angle is achieved.</p><p>If we opt to apply two bends, we gain dimension <strong>C</strong>, <strong>D</strong> and small <strong>r</strong>. Similar to <strong>A</strong>, <strong>B</strong> and <strong>R</strong>, dimension <strong>C</strong> locates the point at which the deflection occurs, dimension <strong>D</strong> defines the amount of deflection and dimension <strong>r</strong> defines the radius of the bend. Like dimension <strong>B</strong>, dimension <strong>D</strong> can be either positive or negative.</p><p>When curves are applied to any of the tubes in the front triangle, notice that the icons defining the <a title=\"Tube extensions\" href=\"http://www.bikecad.ca/tube_extension\">extension of the seat tube above the top tube</a> as well as the <a title=\"Tube extensions\" href=\"http://www.bikecad.ca/tube_extension\">extension of the head tube above and below the top tube and down tube</a> becomes locked in the mode of defining this extension as the distance along the centerline of the seat tube and head tube. The option to define the extension by a distance measured along the edge of the tube is no longer available. When modeling bends in tubes, it can be helpful to turn on the problem curves checker. <p>The auxiliary view of seat stays and chain stays has been enhanced for BikeCAD <a href=\"http://www.bikecad.ca/version_10\">version 10</a>.  The display mode of the auxiliary views used to be wireframe at all times.  Now the auxiliary view assumes the same display mode as the rest of the drawing.</p><p>The rear wheel used to be displayed as a faint line drawing.  Now, we can use the wheel display toggle button to display the rear wheel in full colour, as a faint line drawing, or not at all.</p><p>The display of the cassette, the chain, the disc rotor, fenders, rear wheel, cranks and shoe can all be controlled within the auxiliary view dialog box.  We can show these components in the auxiliary view regardless of whether or not they are shown in the side view.  The cranks can be shown with the drive side crank oriented forward or backward.</p><p>The chain will be displayed in whichever cog and chainring combination has been selected in the derailleur section of the drivetrain dialog box.  Before changing those values, note that the dimensions Rear chainline, Front chainline and chainline offset can all be displayed in the General tab within the Stays (auxiliary view) tab in the Dimensions dialog box.  As we shift from one chainring to another and from one cog to another, we can see these dimensions updating.  The current gear combination is also highlighted in red in the Gearing graph dialog box.</p><p>Other auxiliary view dimensions related to the drivetrain include those in the sprockets tab as well as several dimensions in the Cranks tab which can be found inside the Components tab.</p><p>In the Cranks section of the Drivetrain dialog box, we can now directly enter a value for the W3 dimension.  You'll find that dimension paired with the F dimension.  Leaving this dimension set to F means that as we increase the Q value for the cranks the cranks shift apart as a unit.  If we leave this dimension set to W3, then increasing Q causes the crank arms to shift apart, but the chainrings will remain in the specified position.</p>","","1","0","1","0","bcurry");
